The Metropolitan Cathedral of Rethymno is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia Theotokou). It is popularly called Megali Panagia (Great Holy Virgin) to distinguish it from Mikri Panagia (Little Virgin).
The church of St. Barbara (Agia Varvara) in Rethymno was built in 1885 on the site of an earlier church from 1663. During Ottoman rule of Crete the church was transformed into a bathhouse. With Russian occupation, the building served as a place of worship for the new authorities.
The church of the Four Martyrs is a place of worship dedicated to the four Cretan martyrs (Aggelis, Emmanouil, Georgios and Nikolaos) who were executed by the Ottomans in 1824 after refusing to convert to Islam. It was inaugurated in 1975.
