About this building

The mosque was built by the Ottoman governor of Athens, Mustapha Agha Tzistarakis. Legend says thatTzistarakis used one of the pillars of Temple of Olympian Zeus from the Acropolis.

After Greek independence, the mosque was used for several purposes including a barracks, a prison and a warehouse. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was restored. From 1918 to 1973 it housed the National Museum of Decorative Arts which would later become the Museum of Greek Folk Art.

Cathedral of Athens

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens is an Orthodox cathedral built between 1842 and 1862. The construction of this neoclassical building began under the architect Theophil Hansen and was continued by Dimitris Zezos, Panagis Kalkos and François Boulanger. In 1999, the cathedral was damaged by an earthquake and a restoration operation had to be carried out which lasted until 2016.
