St Issui

St Mary The Virgin was built in 1762 on the site of a medieval place of worship and pilgrimage. Two headstones by Eric Gill can be found in the churchyard.

Church of St Aeddan, Bettws Newydd is a well-preserved and well-restored 15th-century medieval parish church. It is suggested that the foundations of the church were laid down in the 12th century.

St Mary's has occupied this site for over 900 years, although we are uncertain of the date of consecration. Originally built as a chapel of ease to the Priory (now Cathedral), the Norman pillar and grant from the Town Council in the 12th century for the offering of Mass, testify to its early foundation.
