Originally built as a Roman Catholic Church of the Roman Catholic Parish "De Graankorrel". From the beginning, however, it has also been used ecumenically.

The mosque was built by the Surinamese -born Mohamed Idris Luqman (1950-1999) and the community of Amsterdam Zuidoost. The Taibah mosque is a mosque for Muslims from Suriname, India and Pakistan.
