Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Angra do Heroísmo)
The church dates to the primitive Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, built between 1460 and 1474, on the initiative of Álvaro Martins Homem, one of the first settlers of Angra. In the same period, he was also responsible for the construction of the original Hermitage of São Salvador, now the Cathedral.
About this building
Although the date of its construction is unknown, Alfredo da Silva Sampaio states that the oldest document known regarding the Church of Conceição is a Charter from João III of Portugal, issued on March 26, 1553, determining to the bishop that the hermitage became the seat of the parish of the same name..
