From being owned by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in Feldkirch, then to the Bavarian government and private owners, the site was finally owned by industrialist Helmut Gassner, who offered it to refugee monks from Tibet in the 1960's, and has since been a Tibetan buddhist monastery.
The Feldkirch Cathedral was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style with only two naves due to limited space. The original church was badly damaged during the town fires of 1348, 1396 and 1460 and in 1478 it was rebuilt and consecrated under the architect Hans Sturn with a late Gothic nave and a gable roof. In 1479, the church tower to the north was completed. Around 1520, the present choir hall was built under a lower gable roof.

The Cathedral of St. Florin is a neo-Gothic church built from 1869 to 1873. It was built on the site of a small medieval chapel mentioned since the 14th century. the church undertook restorations in 1965-1966.
