St Nicolaas Church

The St. Nicholas Church in Oostrum is on a partially excavated mound. The tower is considerably older than the church building. The tower with gable roof was built in the 13th century. The church itself was probably built in the 16th century. The church has striking murals.

About this building

The village is located near Dokkum. It is built on a medieval mound of 4.5 meters above NAP. The mound has been partly excavated. This medieval church stands on the mound. The church is made of recycled material and with large windows, framed by wide layers of rollers, in the late 15th or early 16th century, to replace an older church. In 1937 two heavy buttresses were removed against the west façade of the tower. In 1973 all buttresses were reintroduced. On the roof of the church, tiles dating from the Middle Ages still stand out: the so-called nuns and monks. The clock was cast in 1457 by H. Kokenbacker. Services are still being provided.
