Ioannis Theater Church

The church of Wier is made up of a large size monastery and dates from the thirteenth century. It has been beautifully restored, while retaining authentic colours and elements.

About this building

The church of Wier stands on a bank on the former coast of the Middelzee. It was most likely originally built as a chapel of the nearby Lauta state. The nearby sea only disappeared when the Bildt dykes were constructed in the sixteenth century. The nave has a semi-circular choir. In 1786 the south wall was provided with a new shell of bricks. The buttresses on the south side of the nave date from 1923. The tower was completely renovated in 1881. On the south side is the Astronomical clock. The organ was built by P.J. Radersma from Wieuwert (1842). It is still waiting for restoration. The church is being marketed as the 'Ioannis Theater Tsjerke Wier'. Two toilets have been installed and, moreover, the church is equipped with a modern light and sound system. The church is for rent for those interested.
