Naples Cathedral

The long process of the construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (13th century but refitted until the 20th century) is reflected in the overlapping of many architectural styles from Gothic to Baroque to Neo-Gothic.

About this building

It is difficult to say exactly when the first basilica was founded here, although there is evidence of an organised Christian community in the 2nd century AD as is shown by the archaeological remains of catacombs and temples from this period that have been found in the area.

The construction of the first cathedral building began in the 13th century by integrating various temples into a larger one and later, in the 14th century, with new additions.

The cathedral has incorporated as a side chapel the Basilica of Santa Restituta, founded in the 4th century at the site of the cathedral.
