The Grote Kerk is called in full St. Peter's Chair in Antioch and is dedicated to the apostle Peter. Around the year 1000, there was already a small hall church here. The current church was mainly built from the 14th to the middle of the 16th century in a regional Gothic style, the Maasland Gothic. The church served as both a chapter church and a parish church.
Originally built as a church for the Ursuline monastery St. Calvaire, founded in 1843, for the purpose of educating girls. Large numbers of pilgrims in honour of a miraculous healing that took place here soon made the construction of a larger church necessary. This was built in 1875-'79 to a design by Joh. Kayser in neo-Gothic style. In 1883, the church was the first Dutch church to be elevated to Basilica Minor by the Vatican. In 1997, an extensive restoration took place.
St. Michael's Church. Single-nave church, built in 1659-1668 with a three-sided closed choir, roof turret and a strikingly richly decorated facade with volutes and pediment. The design is possibly by Father Hieronymus Mauritius from Brussels. Initially used as a monastery church by the Dominican Fathers. In the late 17th century, the sacristy was built against the choir closure with the library above it.
