About this building
The parish Church of Saint Martin, located in Cuncy-les-Varzy in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was founded in the first quarter of the sixteenth century. It was built on the site of a former place of worship of Romanesque style that was built in the twelfth century, but today only the base of the bell tower remains.
The construction of the building, in the shape of a Latin cross, seems to have taken place in two stages because the vaulted nave of two bays seems a little older than the remains of the edifice. Above the transept stands the bell tower, with each of the four sides pierced by a bay. The bell tower is of more recent style, as it was built on old foundations dating from the eleventh century. Finally, a flat chevet completes the choir.
The church, built in the flamboyant Gothic, has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1971, as well as several elements of its furniture: a Christ on the cross and a handbell in bronze and iron, and paintings representing the Montée Calvary all date to the seventeenth century. Stained glass windows, dating back to the 16th century, have also been classified as Historic Monuments since 1976; they represent the life of St. Martin, a martyred officer of the Theban legion who lived in the third century AD and under whose protection are placed orders of chivalry.
