About this building
The church of Saint Martin d'Escames, in the Hauts-de-France region, dates from the 16th century. This building, dedicated to Saint Martin, a martyred officer of the Theban legion that lived in the third century, is an excellent example of the flamboyant Gothic style.
It consists of a large vaulted nave of three spans, a choir with five sides and a protruding transept. On each side of the crossing are two braces, consisting of four thick pillars, which were once seigniorial chapels, in view of the coats of arms on their keystone. The western gateway is surmounted by a bridal arch that is adorned with cabbage leaves, while two statues, now destroyed, used to frame the southern portal.
The church also has beautiful furniture, some of which are classified. In particular: a baptismal stone basin dates from the thirteenth century, three bronze bells of 1615 and a ridge of lead ridge of the sixteenth century.
