About this building
The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is located in Sainpuits, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was first built in the 12th century, but underwent profound changes at the end of the Hundred Years War that ravaged the region.
It was redeveloped in the Renaissance (fifteenth century and early sixteenth century) in the flamboyant Gothic style. The building is dominated by a tall 16th century bell tower, which has a flamboyant style entrance to the west. The top of the bell tower offers a breathtaking view of the village and its surroundings.
Built according to a single nave plan, the church is vaulted with ribs that have prismatic ridges that fall to the ground without capitals. The nave is extended to the east by a three-sided choir. A small sacristy was built in the nineteenth century. Two seigniorial chapels are found on the south wall of the nave, while to the north stands a small turret.
Several pieces of furniture are listed as Historical Monuments. There is a large painting depicting Mary Magdalene as a penitent. The stained glass windows that survive in the apse date back to the second half of the 19th century.
