Donatus Church
The history of this building, one of the oldest churches in the north of the country, is visible in the side walls, the transept of the monastery and the 13th century brick choir.
About this building
The interior has a wooden ceiling in the nave and in the transept, while the choir is covered with a dome vault with painted brick patterns.
In the interior are murals from the fifteenth century, including that of St. Ursula. The 17th century pulpit is the only remaining piece of old furniture. The rest was lost in a fire in 1957. However, there are still remains of a 14-century stone doksaal. The Groninger painter Henk Helmantel has painted a reconstruction of this. Under the choir is a 16th century burial cellar.
