Trnava Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the first purely Baroque building in Slovakia. It was part of a group of university buildings. The donor of the church, the Palatine Nicholas Esterházy, entrusted the construction of the church to the Italian master Antonio and Pietro Spazzi in 1629. The church, still unfinished, was consecrated in 1637.

In the years 1380 - 1421, a new church in late Gothic style was built on its foundations. From 1543 to 1820 the church was the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Esztergom.
