Zuurdijk Church

It is believed that the church of Zuurdijk dates back to at least 1287, but building traces that have been found suggest that the church could be about fifty years older. In 1849 the hall church was thoroughly renovated, and much of the medieval character was lost. Originally there were brick vaults, of which arch forms are still recognizable in the wall.

About this building

Over the centuries, a lot has changed in the church: the tower was rebuilt in 1789 and the church was shortened a lot. The church was thoroughly restored in 2001. In the church and in the cemetery are many wealthy farmers from Zuurdijk, as, in the first half of the 19th century, it was one of the richest villages in Groningen. The village also had many less fortunate residents. After winning a SOGK competition, a memorial stone will be installed for them, with a text by Geuchien Zijlma (1842-1922). The church is also a wedding location.

The organ was installed in 1923 by a German company, for the price of 156,000 Reichsmark. Given the economic tension in Germany when it came to delivery of the organ the price was no longer worth the delivery, so the Church Council agreed to pay an extra 400 guilders in compensation.
