Tolbert Church

This church has played an important role in the community: its decorations commemorate many important local residents, and it has also been used as a schoolhouse for local children.

About this building

This church contains many memorials to the residents of Auwemahuis and Harkema, such as the 17th century gentlemen's banks, and the various sisters in the nave and choir. The arms of Carell van Inhuisen- and Kniphuisen (Lord of Nienorth, Vredewolt and Uplewardt) and Ivo Auwema van Auwemahuis are on the bell. The church also features an organ from 1867.

In 1815 the school in Tolbert had become so dilapidated that an alternative had to be found and so, until 1962 the children were taught in the choir part of the church. To create something of an enclosed space, a barrier was placed in the triumphal arch. Over the years, the church has played an important role in the village society. Nowadays the church is used for services of the local community 'Oldebert'. Every year there is a cycle of concerts called "Music in 'd Olle Buurt" and exhibitions are also held.
