Midwolde Church

The most beautiful Adelskerk in the Netherlands is open from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays.

About this building

The interior and inventory are largely manufactured for the residents of the nearby Nienoord deposit. The showpiece is the marble tomb by Rombout Verhulst, commissioned by Anna van Ewsum († 1714). A burial cellar is located under the tomb. There is also an oak portal, a gentleman's bench from about 1660 and a beautifully carved pulpit from 1711 by city architect Allert Meijer. A stained glass recalls 1907, when the Van Panhuys family from Midwolde, to whom the church owes its entire interior, drowned in the Hoendiep.

The most beautiful Adelskerk in the Netherlands is open from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm (other days by appointment). The church is only open by appointment from October to April. The mentioned burial cellar is not open to the public. This church belongs to the largest Museum of the Netherlands together with the churches of Krewerd, Middelstum and Pieterburen.

Organ: In this church an organ of Levinus Eekmans from 1630. It was cultivated by Andreas de Mare in 1657-60. In 1787 Lohman revised it. Between 1911-13 it was changed by Van Oeckelen. The reconstruction in 1984-86 by A.H. de Graaf has restored the organ to its condition of 1660. In 2013, major maintenance was carried out by Orgelmakerij Van der Putten. Because of them a nightingale has been placed as a new register.
