Jitianu Monastery was established in the 16th century. The church of St. Demetrius of Jitianu Monastery dates back to 1657. In 1690, and again in the early 18th century, the monastery was plundered by the Turks and Tatars. In 1802, the bell tower of the church was built. Throughout the 19th century the monastery was misused and by the beginning of the 20th century the monastery was in ruins. The church was restored in 1910, 1926, 1958 and 1988-89.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Great Martyr Dimitrie, the protector of Craiova, was built on the site of an older church founded by the boyars of Craiova at the end of the 15th century (1483) or the beginning of the 16th century. The present Saint Dumitru Cathedral was built in 1889 after the destruction of the old church by an earthquake in 1840. The interior paintings were done between 1907 and 1933. The church did not become an Orthodox cathedral until 1940.
The old monastery of Coșuna - Bucovățul is the oldest building in Craiova, probably dating from the 15th century. For the construction of the church, stones and bricks from the Roman camp of Pelendava were used.
The Church of the Madonna Dudu, or Cathedral of the Mother of God, was built between 1750 and 1756. It had to be rebuilt in 1844 after being destroyed by the earthquake of 1831. The painting in the church bears the signature of Gheorghe Tattarescu. The church was named after the miraculous icon of the Mother of God who made the church a place of pilgrimage.
