Church Fransum
As the only church in the province of Groningen, Fransum has a masonry brick pulpit from the Middle Ages. This lonely church is built for the Cistercian monks of Aduard.
About this building
It initially had a Romanesque vassal with 3 bays, but one of them was later replaced by a three-sided closed choir. The west facade and late Gothic choir were built in the 16th century. The 17th century roof turret has an octagonal lantern.
During the restoration of 1949-1950, the later broken-in large windows of the vassel were replaced by three smaller windows. The mound has never been cultivated; it was the own terrain of the monks. The church is managed by the "Vroedschap Fransum" founded in 1971. The space is regularly rented out for concerts and meetings. Church services are no longer being held.
