Harkstede Church

In 1700, a church building was erected in Harkstede that was notable for its strong historic character and, moreover, for the enormous, arched tombs underneath the entire church floor.

About this building

The founders Henric Piccardt and Anna Elisabeth Rengers opted for an almost medieval appearance in a post-reformatory period. But above all they chose a lasting memory of themselves. Even after the transfer, the ecclesiastical function of the building remains in their honor.

In addition to church services and the Christmas Eve service, the church is also available for wedding and funeral services. The church council of the Protestant community Scharmer-Harkstede and the SOGK have expressed the wish to designate the church as a museum church. The core of this redevelopment plan is that the church itself is the museum; it is therefore not the intention that the church functions as a building in which a museum is housed. A key piece of this museum will be the organ, which was built in 1695-1696 by Arp Schnitger.

This simple hall church was built in the 13th century. There were many renovations and restorations. During the last restoration of 2005, the previously demolished sacramental niche was reinstalled in the eastern wall and provided with the Gothic crowning.
