Synagogue in Asti

The Cathedral of Asti, built between 1266 and 1470, is one of the greatest examples of Lombard Gothic architecture to be found in Northern Italy. There was already a cathedral there in the 5th century, but it was destroyed by arson around the year 1070. A new cathedral was then erected in 1095, probably in the Lombard Romanesque style. The present church gradually replaced the old one and integrated the pre-existing structure.

The Church of San Pietro in Consavia, or Baptistery Complex of San Pietro, consists of four buildings dating from the 12th and 14th centuries. It was Bishop Landolfo di Vergiate who, after 1100, began the construction of the first buildings, as a copy of the holy sepulchre. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the church was endowed with a side building that formed a courtyard. Deteriorated and disfigured over the centuries, a restoration between 1930 and 1932 brought the church back to its former medieval structure. At the same time, an Archaeological Museum was placed there, and has recently moved to Palazzo del Michelerio.

Alba Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1517 and has elements of Romanesque and Gothic style. Of the old church, which already existed in the 11th century, only the bell tower, the three portals, the façade portico and the crypt have been preserved; the other parts, which were unsafe, have been demolished. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the cathedral underwent consolidation restorations and was equipped with new altars and chapels.
