St. Mary's Church

St. Lawrence Church is a church built by the Cistercians at the end of the 13th century. According to legend, the builder of the church was the martyred monk Laurentius, who was burnt at the stake by the pagans. Probably in the second quarter of the 15th century, master builders from Tallinn were commissioned to vault the sanctuary. During the Livonian War (1564) the vaults and pillars were destroyed. The church also suffered from the Great Northern War, when, among other things, the church bells were taken away. The present Baroque bell tower was built in 1760, and a comprehensive reconstruction took place in 1889-90 under the direction of Friedrich Axel von Howen.

The Church of St. Simeon and the Prophetess Anne is the Orthodox Apostolic Cathedral in Tallinn. It was built between 1752 and 1755 on the initiative of seafarers. As the coastline was then much closer to the city, the church was almost on the waterfront and the foundations had to be filled in. According to tradition, shipwrecks were used for this purpose. The historic wooden building suffered during the Soviet era but has now been completely restored.

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is a Russian Orthodox church built between 1825 and 1827 on an old Russian church according to the plans drawn up in 1807 by the architect Luigi Rusca. The neoclassical church is one of the first domed churches in the capital.
