The first church in Alatornio was built on the present site, perhaps as early as the beginning of the 13th century. It is known for sure that a wooden church was present at the latest in 1316. In its present form, the church of Alatornio was built in 1794-1797, the eastern nave is still a medieval stone church from the 16th century.
Haparanda Church, formerly Nedertorneå Church, was built in the structuralist and brutalist style by architect Bengt Larsson in 1967. It replaced a church of the same name, which was completely destroyed by fire on 14 June 1963. In 2020, the Architectural Uprising (Arkitekturupproret) voted Haparanda Church as the ugliest building in Norrland.
The old church of Keminmaa, or St. Michael's Church, was probably built between 1520 and 1553. Apparently, the church had many wall paintings, but these were destroyed. There were also two bell towers next to the church, both destroyed.
Seskarö Church is a wooden church that was built between 1928 and 1929 according to the plans of the builder Hjalmar Olsson and was consecrated on 18 August 1929 by Bishop Olof Bergqvist. The church consists of a single nave with a rectangular plan. In 1945 the church underwent a complete restoration and was rededicated on 18 November by Bishop Bengt Jonzon.
