The Bologna Synagogue was built in 1928 and was the design of Attilio Muggia, conceived as an elegant square hall divided into three naves, with cross vaults. The walls were decorated with Art Nouveau motifs. The synagogue was destroyed in a bombing in 1943. It was rebuilt on the same site in 1954 to a design by Guido Muggia, who wanted to revisit his father's project.
The church of San Salvatore was built between 1606 and 1623 on an ancient medieval church, the seat of the Canons Regular of Santa Maria in Reno. The present building was built by Vincenzo Porta, according to the project of the Barnabite father Giovanni Ambrogio Mazenta and the architect Tommaso Martelli. The façade, with its simple lines, houses in four niches the terracotta statues representing the evangelists, made by Giovanni Tedeschi and originally painted in imitation bronze. Three other copper statues are placed at the top.
The Basilica di San Francesco is a 13th century Bolognese church dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, owned by the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. Between 1397 and 1402, a new large bell tower was erected on a project by Antonio di Vincenzo. After the arrival of the French (1796), the church was deconsecrated and reduced to a customs house. Between 1886 and 1906, Alfonso Rubbiani supervised a restoration that returned the church to its original appearance but with a heavy rebuilding. The bombings of the Second World War caused further damage and collapse of the complex (facade, vaults and cloister), which was then restored.
The Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore was commissioned between 1606 and 1611 by the Barnabites to the architect Ambrogio Magenta or Mazenta. The Barnabites named the church Maggiore to distinguish it from the other two churches dedicated to St. Paul in Bologna. During the Napoleonic invasion, the Barnabites were suppressed and the church became a parish in 1819. Subsequently closed, it was rededicated in 1878. In 1959 it was returned to the Barnabites and two years later Pope John XIII gave it the title of minor basilica.
