Ancient village church with a thriving local congregation and community.
God has been worshipped on the site of the church for well over 1000 years. According to local tradition in AD 635 St Birinus, the first person to bring Christianity to the area, baptised Cyngils, King of the West Saxons, in the spring just west of the church.
St Nicholas Church traces its roots to the 7th century. Evidence suggest that the early church was made from wood and thatched with reeds. It was reconstructed in the 12th century using stone and flint. However, the 1605-06 high floods inundated the church. The present building was completed in 1614. In 1714, the tower was added at the suggestion of Queen Anne.
