Chiesa di Santa Restituta

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 11th century. In 1229, Sora was destroyed by Emperor Frederick II, but the emperor ordered in his will that Sora Cathedral be rebuilt at the expense of the royal treasury. The cathedral was rebuilt and opened for worship in 1305. Damaged by the earthquake of 13 January 1915, the cathedral was further destroyed by fire a year later. Only the massive, square stone walls remained standing.

The date of construction of the church of San Bartolomeo is not yet known, but the discovery of an 11th century single-light window in the centre of the apse wall confirms the pre-existing Romanesque architectural structure. The current façade, which replaces the pre-existing baroque façade, already remodelled after the earthquake of 24 July 1654, is in neoclassical style and reproduces the layout of a Greek tetrastyle temple, with a nave flanked by a pair of false bell towers placed at the end of the façade itself. The interior of the church was embellished and took on its present configuration between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is attached to a convent of the Passionist Fathers. The construction of the present complex took place in the last years of the 16th century. The church was completed in 1601, as evidenced by the date engraved on the architrave of the entrance portal of the church itself. Further work was carried out in 1840-42 to enlarge parts of the convent, with the construction of a new wing to make the structure suitable for the Passionist Fathers and the building of the bell tower. In 1854, a choir was built over the arches of the portico, thus modifying the original façade of the church. Adaptations were also made to the interior of the church, the chapels and the floor.
