About this building
The monastery is first mentioned in a document of 1169, though some sources attribute its foundation to Alexios I, prince of Wallachia. It was a rather modest monastery until the 14th century when its community grew and acquired some properties in Macedonia and in Wallachia.
The monastery's library holds 662 manuscripts and approximately 3,500 printed books.
