Philotheou Monastery

Philotheou or Filotheou Monastery is one of the 20 self-governing Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos. It is ranked twelfth in the Athonite, the hierarchical order of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos.

About this building

The monastery was founded in the 10th century. It is the monastery at the highest altitude of all the monasteries on the Athos peninsula.

The Katholicon or monastery church is home to the wonder-working icon of the "Theotokos Glykofiloussa".

The monastery is also famous for having been the place where Cosmas the Aetolian, an important figure of the contemporary Orthodox church began his tour to promote the construction of churches and schools after his ordination as a monk.
