Igreja do Loreto, Lisbon
The Igreja do Loreto (Church of Our Lady of the Loreto) was built in 1518 to offer Italian merchants a place of worship in Portugal's capital. For this reason the church is also known as the Church of the Italians.
About this building
The full name of the church is Church of Our Lady of the Loreto of the Italians (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Loreto dos Italianos). The 1755 earthquake left the church in a poor condition, so it had to be rebuilt in 1785.
The 12 chapels that flank the nave in representation of the twelve apostles are covered with Italian marble. The church houses a pipe organ from the 18th century.
