Construction of Beauvais Cathedral began in 1225 and the choir was completed in 1272. A second phase of construction, however, lasted from 1499 to 1532, and saw the elevation of the transept. Although its nave collapsed several times due to its dizzying height, and was never really completed, Beauvais Cathedral has the highest nave in the world.
The nave is Romanesque and dates from around 1120, and the construction work finally lasted until the following century. The transept, also Romanesque, is slightly older, while the high windows and the cross vault were rebuilt in the 16th century.
A first church stood in the place of the present one but was destroyed under the bombings of 1940. It was rebuilt between 1949 and 1956.
