Ossiach Abbey

This was the first Benedictine abbey founded in the medieval Duchy of Carinthia.

About this building

A church probably already existed at the same location in Ossiach, although no remains are preserved.

The current church was erected in the 11th century in a Romanesque style. It underwent extensive restoration in the Late Gothic due to a fire that consumed part of the building, and later in the Baroque period when the stucco decoration of the Wessobrunner School was added.

In the 18th century, the order was dissolved and most of the abbey was used as barracks. In the 19th century a large part of the premises was demolished. Since the 20th century the building has been operated by the local administration, resuming liturgical activity.

St. James Church

The church of St. James was first mentioned in the 12th century. The church was rebuilt twice after earthquakes in 1348 and 1690. In 1944, the 16th-century glass paintings and the church roof were destroyed. Complete restorations were carried out in the second half of the 20th century.
