Pantokratoros Monastery

Pantokratoros Monastery is one of the 20 self-governing Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos. It is ranked seventh in the Athonite, the hierarchical order of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos.

About this building

It was founded in 1360 by Alexios, military commander of the Byzantine Empire, and John the Primikerios, head of the administrative department where it stands. The monk and politician of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, Benjamin of Lesbos, was ordain monk here. The church features wall-paintings from artists of the Macedonian School, some of which were restored in the 19th century.

Among the monastery's treasures, the most significant is a fragment of the True Cross. Its library has 350 codices, two liturgical scrolls and 3,500 printed books.
