The Preveli Monastery is an Orthodox monastery of the sixteenth century, particularly known for its resistance to the Ottomans in 1866 and during the Second World War. It has a small museum that contains icons and liturgical objects.
The monastery of Arkadi dates from the 16th century and is marked by the influence of the Renaissance, the island being then Venetian. Destroyed by the Turks in 1866 (since rebuilt), Arkadi embodied resistance against the Ottoman occupation.
The Neratze Mosque, formerly the Santa Maria Church, was a monastery church converted into a mosque in 1657. Today, the building is a cultural centre for the municipality of Rethymno.
The Vosakou Monastery is a Venetian monastery erected between 1676 and 1740 as a fortress and whose main temple (Katholiko) is dedicated to Timios Stavros (Santa Cruz). The monastery was recently re-established in 1998.
