About this building
The mound with the old village on it has been partially excavated and this can be seen very clearly on the north side. The Church stands on the remaining part of the mound. The thick walls and the small (round) arch windows are characteristic of the Romanesque architectural style from the 10th to 13th century. The church is made up of a large size brick. The building has no west entrance. The church of Raard was originally owned by Klaarkamp monastery. The tower, owned by the municipality of Dongeradeel, dates from 1787. The bells in the tower are from 1523 and 1620.
