Santa Cruz Church and Monastery, Coimbra
The Monastery of the Holy Cross is an Augustinian monastery founded in the 12th century. Its Igreja de Santa Cruz is one of Portugal’s most important churches as it houses the royal tombs of Portugal's two first kings.
About this building
The construction of the monastery and its church began in 1131 although little remains have survived of this early monastic complex. The current structure dates back to the 16th century. This monastery was the founding place of the illustrious University of Coimbra. Its cloister is one of the greatest examples of Manueline architecture in Portugal. The interior walls of the church are partially covered by Baroque tiles depicting different episodes of the history of Portugal.
