Christian witness may have taken place on this site since Roman times. The first church was built soon after 971 AD and dedicated to the memory of Swithin, Bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862. The foundations of this Saxon church lie beneath the floor of the crypt.

Bradford on Avon was an important religious centre in Saxon times and St Laurence's church is an ancient building, thought to be one of the most complete Saxon buildings still in existence.
Some of the earliest evidence of habitation here comes from fragments of Roman settlements. Discoveries from archaeological digs have revealed the remains of a large Roman Villa decorated with well preserved mosaic on the playing grounds of St Laurence School.
Mells is a picturesque rural village in the Mendip hills. A walk through the village to the church is one of the prettiest in Somerset, up a medieval street and historic buildings around the churchyard.
From the churchyard you can glimpse the manor house, held by the Horner family (associated with the Rhyme Little Jack Horner) and their descendants, the Asquiths since the 16th century. They include Sir Herbert Asquith, Prime Minister.
