About this building
The history of this former church is connected to the Tjarda van Starkenborgh family. In 1656, one of the children ordered the elevation of the tower and the repair of the church. A family heirloom, in the form of a weapon, carved by Casper Struiwig, now hangs in the church. A family crypt is located underneath the choir.
'Trompe-l'oeil' performances by Matthijs Röling & Wout Muller adorn the wooden barrel vault of the church: a cow, bull and a tortoise, between palm trees. The building is older than the exterior suggests; the first inscription is from 1553 and can be found on a beam.
Since the renovation into a cultural center in 1985, theater performances, cabarets and concerts are organized here. Theater lessons are also given. The church also contains an organ by Doornbos from 1923.
