Viklau Church
Viklau Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland. The church is known for preserving the Viklau Madonna, a wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary from the 12th century.
About this building
Over the centuries, the church has remained largely untouched, retaining a strong Romanesque style. Only the 19th century restoration brought some changes to the presbytery.
The church is known for being home to the Viklau Madonna, a Romanesque wooden sculpture depicting Virgin Mary. The original sculpture is currently exhibited at the Swedish History Museum is Stockholm. The church keeps a copy. Apart from this 12th century relic, the church also houses a rood cross and a baptismal font from the same century. The baptismal font has been attributed to Gotland's Romanesque sculptor Hegvald.
