About this building

This mosque is particularly known for its İznik tiles, which decorate the interior and the façade of the portico. Ceramics from the city of İznik were very appreciated and coveted during the Byzantine period.

Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Istanbul

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, in the Edirnekapı neighbourhood, was built between 1563 and 1570 on the Sixth Hill of the city. The mosque was commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent, and designed by the chief imperial architect Mimar Sinan. This is the second and largest of the two mosques with the same name. Another Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, built two decades earlier, can be found in the Üsküdar district.
