Amargeti Mosque

The mosque is located in the western area of the village centre opposite the Greek Orthodox Zoodochou Pigi Church.

About this building

The first mosque on this site was built in 1915, but quickly fell into disrepair due to the materials used. By the end of the 1930s, the building was so dilapidated that it could no longer be used. Despite numerous requests for support for a new building from the relevant institutions, it would take until the early 1950s before the construction of a new mosque was approved. In the late summer of 1953, the new building, which consisted of a combination of mosque and school, was completed. The Paphos earthquake damaged the new building so badly that it had to be demolished and rebuilt.

Pitargou Mosque

Based on the available sources, there were two mosques in the village. According to the cadastral map, the old mosque was located directly in the village centre. The building that is still visible today, which was a combination of a mosque and a school, was built on the southern edge of the village on the ridge.
