Cappella Pappacoda

The Cappella Pappacoda is a historic chapel alongside the Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore. It is one of the few original medieval buildings that have survived to the present day in Naples despite the many earthquakes the city has suffered over the centuries.

About this building

It was commissioned in 1415 by Artusio Pappacoda, councillor of King Ladislaus I of Naples. It would operate for centuries as the family chapel. The entrance has preserved its original late Gothic style. The three main statues represent Archangel Michael in the centre and Archangels Raffaele and Piperno on the sides. In the 18th century, the interior was renovated by Giuseppe Pappacoda. The chapel remained closed for many decades. In 2022, the building was ceded to the University of Naples "L'Orientale".
