Church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude
The Church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude is located in Saint-Julien-le-Châtel, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The Church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude is located in Saint-Julien-le-Châtel, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Saint-Julien-le-Châtel is the ancient birthplace of Saint-Julien, who rose to prominence in the eleventh century as the archpriest of Combrailles.
The choir and the apse were originally part of the the castle chapel and date from the end of the 12th century. The nave was reconstructed after the 17th century. The east and west facades are accessible to the public, while the south and north facades are included in the castle's private grounds.
The building houses classified objects and furniture that is listed as a Historical Monument, including a seventeenth century painting of Saint John the Baptist, a second painting called the Adoration of the Shepherds that is signed by the painter Bégulle, and a statue of Saint Julien de Brioude, dressed as a Roman legionary, that dates from the nineteenth century.
