The church of St. Barbara (Agia Varvara) in Rethymno was built in 1885 on the site of an earlier church from 1663. During Ottoman rule of Crete the church was transformed into a bathhouse. With Russian occupation, the building served as a place of worship for the new authorities.
The Valide Sultan Mosque, commonly known as the Mosque of the Great Gate (Megali Porta Mosque) was built in the 17th century, shortly after the Ottomans annexed Crete to their empire.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Rethymno is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia Theotokou). It is popularly called Megali Panagia (Great Holy Virgin) to distinguish it from Mikri Panagia (Little Virgin).
The former church is St. Francis is a historic place of worship that today houses the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.
