Mosque of the Great Gate, Rethymno

The Valide Sultan Mosque, commonly known as the Mosque of the Great Gate (Megali Porta Mosque) was built in the 17th century, shortly after the Ottomans annexed Crete to their empire.

About this building

The mosque was named after Turhan Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV. The minaret was rebuilt in 1878. The mosque's fountain can be seen inside a shop on Bosporus street.

Church of St. Barbara, Rethymno

The church of St. Barbara (Agia Varvara) in Rethymno was built in 1885 on the site of an earlier church from 1663. During Ottoman rule of Crete the church was transformed into a bathhouse. With Russian occupation, the building served as a place of worship for the new authorities.
