Metropolitan Cathedral of Rethymno
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Rethymno is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia Theotokou). It is popularly called Megali Panagia (Great Holy Virgin) to distinguish it from Mikri Panagia (Little Virgin).
About this building
The building was completed in 1856. However, it had to be demolished after World War II due to its poor state. Only the bell tower of the original church was preserved which is now detached from the church building. The church houses important icons such as the Virgin of the Passion, from the 15th century.
