Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin-Saint-Blaise

Built in ashlar except for the sacristy which is made of rubble. Its bell tower built in 1853 supports a masonry spire. The church is also decorated with terracotta statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

About this building

This collegiate church was founded in 1490 by Gaston III of Foix Candale and rebuilt between 1541 and 1544. The church, attached to the north wall of the city walls, is extended to the east by a sacristy. The single nave and the funerary chapel are vaulted with pointed arches. The whole construction is made of ashlar, except for the sacristy, which is built of rubble. The bell tower, supporting a masonry spire, was built in 1853. The terracotta statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul are placed on either side of the entrance of the church and date from the 19th century. The portal open to the south is one of the few tympanum portals in the region. The tympanum field is divided into three compartments with, in the centre, the Paschal Lamb lying down and surmounted by the cross. Two birds decorate the corners.

Sauve-Majeure Abbey

A masterpiece of Romanesque art from the 12th century, this former Benedictine abbey was an active and recognised religious centre. The ensemble that remains of it offers admirable capitals where biblical representations stand next to monsters from the depths of time or from the far east. From the top of its bell tower, there is an impressive view of the village and the landscape. The visit of the monument ends with the discovery of the lapidary museum which presents a collection of sculpted stones (capitals, modillions, keystones) found during the restoration campaigns.

Bazas Cathedral

Building with nearly 1000 years of architecture, spread out since the Carolingian period in the 20th century. The 9th century crypt houses a Roman funerary stele.

Church of Saint-François

Modestly sized and simple-looking, but not without the charm of small churches in the suburbs of large cities. The church has a light interior decor and light exterior walls, giving the building a natural light that is pleasing to the visitor's eye.
