Dionysiou Monastery

Dionysiou Monastery is one of the 20 self-governing Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos. It is ranked fifth in the Athonite, the hierarchical order of the monasteries on the Athos Peninsula.

About this building

It was founded by in the fourteenth century by Saint Dionysios of Korseos. It was completely destroyed by a fire in 1535, except for the tower that had been built only a few years earlier, in 1520. However the community of monks managed to find the resources to rebuild it.

The khatolikon, which was rebuilt in 1540 preserves wall paintings by Tzortzis, a representative of the Cretan School. The refectory also has some valueble frecoes with notable influences of the Cretan School.

The extensive library of the monastery holds around 800 manuscripts and 5,000 printed books.
