Dochiariou Monastery

Dochiariou Monastery is one of the 20 self-governing Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos. It is ranked tenth in the Athonite, the hierarchical order of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos.

About this building

The monastery was founded between 1030-1032 on a promontory near the sea. its foundation is attributed to Euthymios, a pupil of Saint Athanasius of the Great Lavra, who had the service of the "Docheion" (vessel), which gave the name to the monastery.

The present building dates from the 16th century, as well as its distinctive tower. It is home to the miraculous icon of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos, "she who is quick to hear". its library has 395 catalogued manuscripts and 1,500 printed books.
