Xenophontos Monastery

Xenophontos Monastery is one of the 20 self-governing Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos. It is ranked sixteenth in the Athonite, the hierarchical order of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos.

About this building

The monastery owns 17 chapels, 11 inside the monastery and 6 outside. One curious fact is that it has two katholikons or monastery churches. The oldest one dates from the 10th century. The most recent katholikon was built between 1809 and 1819.

Like other monasteries on the Mount Athos peninsula, it suffered the onslaught of pirates and crusaders. The library holds 600 manuscripts, 8 parchments and over 7000 printed books.
